THE WEEKLY ESCAPE

Friday 20 November 2020

We launched just over a month ago and we want t0 thank you all for the positive feedback on NERANO. It’s been lovely to see how many of you are sending a jigsaw puzzle as a thoughtful gift to friends and family to enjoy and keep occupied over lockdown.

We want to keep those positive vibes going and start sharing with you what has filled our downtime over the last week. We were inspired to start NERANO to help others slow down so our new short and sweet weekly updates will include anything and everything that’s grabbed our attention!

We’ve been watching:.

So many cookery programmes..

It’s the season for cookery programmes and we are fully on board. From GBBO (we’re rooting for Laura in next week’s final), Masterchef The Professionals, to the Domestic Goddess that is Nigella. Only Nigella can refer to her kitchen as her ‘sanctuary and pleasure palace’ and we all still take her seriously. She continues to provide endless debate in our house as we argue whether she’s filming in her real kitchen or in a studio. We get jealous of her larder and irritated that she uses every utensil in the kitchen without any thought about the washing up. However, her fish finger bhorta and fried chicken sandwich looked incredible! We’re just holding out for The Jamie Oliver Christmas Specials and we will be fully cookery programme’d out.

Simon Reeve Explores Cornwall

We are big fans of Simon’s travel programmes, where he’s normally throwing himself into risky situations in more remote areas of the world . Due to lockdown, he focused on filming closer to home this summer and chose Cornwall in this two-part BBC documentary. We are from the South West and Cornwall is where we spent our childhood holidays and had a blissful time on the coast. However, a few miles back from the packed beaches it’s a very different story. Cornwall is one of the most deprived areas in Europe, with incredibly high levels of unemployment. Simon shone an important spotlight on these issues and on the inspirational work Don Gardner does in running a food bank for people most in need. Don’s wife had sadly passed away just before filming and her funeral was the next day but he still took the time to show Simon round as he wanted to share how vital the food bank was to over 5,000 families living in the area. It was incredibly moving and showed how much a lifeline the food banks are for so many

With the pandemic, the need has never been greater and you can read more and donate here via this link.

Listenting To..

No doubt about it, it’s been a hefty few weeks for news. To break out of the BBC bubble and avoid all the misinformation spreading on social media, we downloaded the new Times Radio App (it’s free) and have been really enjoying it so far. Intelligent presenters and journalists we trust, giving their take on the news of the day. All of the Times podcasts are in one place and can be easily listened to. Our favourite is ‘Secrets of the Side Hustle’ - a series of conversations with inspiring female founders about their career stories.

We’re Reading…

Toujours Provence by Peter Mayle

It’s November. It’s been raining for four days straight and gale force winds mean we can hardly open the door, let alone go for a walk. Forced to be indoors, I decided to transport myself to a sunnier climate where the biggest worry is how to keep the rosé chilled. In ‘Toujours Provence’ by Peter Mayle, he charts his life and encounters with the locals in early 1990s Provence. It’s a timely reminder of how we could all benefit from switching a little more often onto ‘Provence time’, living life a little more slowly, enjoying what’s on the table for a little longer and tuning our life to work with the changing seasons and not against them.

Homebody by Rupi Kaur

For any fans of poetry or even you are new to it, Instagram poetry sensation, Rupi Kaur, has just released her third book. home body is a collection of raw, honest conversations with oneself – reminding readers to fill up on love, acceptance, community, family, and embrace change. She illustrates all of her poems herself and found fame by self-publishing her work when she was just a 21 year old student. Her work has now sold over 8 million copies and have been translated into over 42 languages.

Please leave us a comment if there is anything you’ve enjoyed really this week or what you are looking forward to that you think we should check out!
